Crime and the Media

Representations of the police

What represnetations of the police are available in current television output.

We seem to be obsessed with crime dramas and real-life shows on TV (schedules analysis here). But why? Do we need reassurance that crime doesn't pay? Do we want to live out a vicarious life as a criminal? And what do the range of representations of police and criminals tell us about the programmes' (and our culture's) attitudes to justice, law and order, criminals etc.

Texts to use
Night Cops
CSI
The Bill
NYPD Blue

What to do
1. Read about representations of police and criminals
2. Analyse extracts from three different tv progs
3. Show these clips to an audience of fans of crime tv progs and explore the reasons for their interest in the genre, and their attitudes to policing and criminality.
